Hardaway|Sziabowski Architects is an accomplished and well-established niche firm. Since 1976, we have completed over 600 successful projects nationwide within three principal areas of specialization: healthcare, commercial, and residential. Within the healthcare sector, our main focus is in ambulatory healthcare design, and our primary specialty is ambulatory surgery centers having designed over 150 ASCs throughout the country.

Joseph Sziabowski AIA

PRESIDENT

Joe is president and CEO of HSA. He is an accomplished architect with over 30 years of professional experience in healthcare, commercial, and residential design. With a special focus on ambulatory surgery center design, he writes and speaks on the subject frequently. He is a Lyceum Fellowship board director and a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council at the Rensselaer School of Architecture.

Hannah Utter

PROJECT MANAGER

Hannah started her career as a building scientist, creating healthy, energy-efficient buildings that better respond to the needs of their occupants. She endeavors to bring this experience to bear on all of her projects, healthcare or otherwise.

Jeffrey Rizzo

SENIOR ARCHITECT

With over thirty years of experience with a variety of project types, Jeff has a deep well to draw upon in finding solutions to the most complex design challenges. He has been applying that background to healthcare projects with HSA since 2015 and continues to manage and perform all project related tasks.

BUSINESS MANAGER

Maggie is an experienced business manager who has focused on supporting entrepreneurial ventures throughout her career. As a “people person”, Maggie is well suited to support Hardaway Sziabowski’s dedication to the client experience.

Nayanpreet Singh

DESIGNER II

A confident designer with considerable project experience, Preet possesses a strong background in space planning and design. Through understanding the client’s objectives and the user needs she strives to create spatial experiences that are highly functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Mark Buckley

TECHNICAL STAFF

Mark has been part of design teams as CADD drafter, technician and more, helping to plan and design healthcare facilities, laboratories and educational buildings for over 20 years.

OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR

Rose is the Office Administrator for HSA. She wears many hats, ensuring business operations are running smoothly.

DESIGNER I

Tapasya has over five years of professional experience and is working towards a Master’s of Architecture at The Boston Architectural College as she paves her way to become an Architect in the United States. A bilingual enthusiast and competent team player, Tapasya aims to achieve excellence & perfection through knowledge, persistence, and experience.

Karen Lin

INTERN

Karen, a fourth-year architecture student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is interning with us this fall. Karen has an interest in designing for sustainability and inclusivity. Fluent in English and Japanese, Karen is currently working to improve her skills in both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Richard T.Hardaway AIA, Founding Principal

Dick founded the firm, Hardaway Associates, in 1976 after eight years with several prominent architectural firms and four years as Chief Architect with National Medical Care. He holds degrees from Amherst College and M.I.T. A consummate professional, Dick prioritized his clients’ objectives while delivering practical and useful structures imbued with aesthetic quality. He was a pioneer in the design of ambulatory surgery centers completing over one hundred ASC’s before retiring in 2022. The guiding principals he established continue to underpin the mission of the firm today.

HARDAWAY|SZIABOWSKI Architects supports the Lyceum Fellowship’s mission to advance the profession of architecture by engaging students in design and travel. As a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Joe Sziabowski met Lyceum founder Jon McKee and became a member of the fellowship upon graduation in 1988. Since then, Joe has helped administer the annual student competition and guide the fellowship with his Lyceum colleagues.
